Question

Find the X and Y intercepts of:
(a) x + 3y = 12
(b) 3x + 5y = 15 [4 MARKS]

Open in App
Solution

Sub-parts : 2 Marks each

(a) x + 3y = 12 .......(i)
At the X intercept, y = 0
Putting y = 0 in the equation(i), we get
x = 12

Hence, the X intercept is 12

At the Y intercept, x = 0
Putting x = 0 in the equation(i), we get
3y = 12
y = 4
Hence, the Y intercept is 4

(b) 3x + 5y = 15 .......(1)
At the X intercept, y = 0
Putting y = 0 in the equation(1), we get
3x = 15
x = 5

Hence, the X intercept is 5

At the Y intercept, x = 0
Putting x = 0 in the equation(1), we get
5y = 15
y = 3

Hence, the Y intercept is 3
