Question

Find two rational and irrational numbers between 2 and 7.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Find the rational numbers

Rational numbers are the numbers that can be represented in pq form where p and q are integers and q0.

Given irrational numbers, 2 and 7

Let the two rational numbers between 2 and 7 be a and b.

Convert the given irrational numbers into decimals.

We know that, 2=1.414 and 7=2.645

So, two decimals between 1.414 and 2.645 can be a=1.5 and b=2.5.

These can be written as,

a=1.5a=1510=32b=2.5b=2510=52

Step 2: Find the irrational numbers

Rational numbers are the numbers that cannot be represented in pq form where p and q are integers and q0.

Let the two irrational numbers between 2 and 7 be x and y.

So,

x=12(2+7)x=(2+7)2y=12(2+x)y=12(2+(2+7)2)y=12(22+142)=22+144

Therefore, the two rational number between 2 and 7 are 32 and 52, while the two irrational numbers are (2+7)2 and 22+144.
