Neil Bartlett in 1962 prepared a compound O2PtF6 by reacting O2 with a powerful oxidising agent platinum hexafluoride. Then he found through X-ray examination of this compound that it has O+2 and PtF6 ions. He replaced oxygen with xenon since ionisation potential of xenon is quite close to ionisation potential of oxygen. XePtF6 was the first real compound of any of the noble gases.
