Neil Bartlett in $1962$ prepared a compound $O_{2}Pt{F}_6$ by reacting $O_2$ with a powerful oxidising agent platinum hexafluoride. Then he found through X-ray examination of this compound that it has $O_2^{+}$ and $Pt{F}_6^{-}$ ions. He replaced oxygen with xenon since ionisation potential of xenon is quite close to ionisation potential of oxygen. $XePt{F}_6$ was the first real compound of any of the noble gases.
