Solution

The correct option is B Functional megaspore
Formation of female gametophyte
Megaspore mother cells divide by meiosis to produce four haploid megaspores. Usually, only 1 out of the 4 megaspores remains functional and the rest degenerate, as in case of monosporic development. The functional megaspore is the first haploid cell of the female gametophyte or embryo sac. It undergoes 3 mitotic divisions to form a mature 7celled and 8nucleated embryo sac.

Microspore mother cell
The microspore mother cells are formed in the male microsporangia or pollen sac. They divide meiotically to form microspores which later transform into pollen grains. The pollens are the first haploid cells of the male gametophyte.

Megaspore mother cell
The megaspore mother cell is a diploid cell which is formed from sporogenous tissue. It is present near to the nucellus of pistil.

Final answer
