Question

Five 100ml beakers were taken and labelled a, b, c, d,and e about 50 ml of water was taken in each of the beaker and following substances were added to each of them, left undisturbed for sometime and observations where recorded:

Beaker A :CuSo4+Zn

Beaker B :CuSo4+Fe

Beaker C :ZnSo4+Cu

Beaker D :FeSo4+Cu

Beaker E :ZnSo4+Fe

Write also the relevant chemical equation.

Solution

1)
Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) -> Cu(s) + ZnSO4 (aq).
CuSo4 solution is blue. It turns colourless, as Znso4 is colourless. Also, brown precipitate of solid copper is formed.
2)
2 reactions occur.
Most possible one is
Fe(s) + CuSO4(aq) → FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
Also,
CuSo4(aq) + 2 Fe(s) = Fe2(So4)3(aq) + 3Cu(s)

Brown ppt of Cu is formed. Also,
solution turns from blue to green as FeSo4 is green.

3) ZnSo4 + Cu -> no reaction.

Copper cannot displace Zn from ZnSO4. So solution remains colourless.

4) FeSO4 + Cu - no reaction. Again, Cu cannot displace iron as iron is more reactive. So, solution remain green.

5) ZnSO4 + Fe - no reaction.
Zn is more reactive than Fe. So, Fe wont displace Zn. Solution remian colorless.
