Question

Five moles of an ideal gas at 293 K is expanded isothermally from an initial pressure of 2.1 MPa to 1.3 MPa against at constant external pressure 4.3 MPa. The heat transferred in this process is _____ kJmol1.
(Rounded-off to the nearest integer)

[R=8.314Jmol1K1]

Solution

For isothermal expansion at constant pressure, heat gained by the system is given by

Q=W (ΔU=0)
W=PΔV
Q=+Pex(V2V1)

V2=nRTP2
V1=nRTP1
Q=Pex×n×R×T(1P21P1)
=4.3×5×8.314×293[11.312.1]

=15.345 kJmol1
Heat transferred per mole is :
q=15.3455=3.063 kJ/mol
