Let the price of the pen be $x$

$\Rightarrow 5 x = 3 x + 17$

$\Rightarrow 5 x - 3 x = 17$

$\Rightarrow 2 x = 17$

$\Rightarrow x = \frac{17}{2}$

$\Rightarrow x = 8.5$

$∴$ the price of the pen is $8.5$ rupees
