Solution

Let's find out the electronic configurations of the given particles from their number of electrons.

  • Electronic configuration is the arrangement of electrons in different energy levels around the nucleus of an atom.
  • P is an electrically neutral atom since number of protons and electrons are given as same.Electronic configuration of P:2,8,2.
  • Q is an electrically neutral atom since number of protons and electrons are given as same.Electronic configuration of Q:2,8,7.
  • R is an electrically neutral atom since number of protons and electrons are given as same.Electronic configuration of R:2,8,7
  • S is an electrically neutral atom since number of protons and electrons are given as same.Electronic configuration of S:2,8.
  • T is a cation or positively charged particle since the number of protons(11) is greater than the number of electrons (10).Electronic configuration of T: 2,8.
  • V is an anion/negatively charged particle since the number of electrons (10) is greater than the number of protons(9).Electronic configuration of V: 2,8.

a)

i) P

ii) P has 2 electrons in its outermost shell. It will have a tendency to give up those two electrons and attain octet. Hence P will be metal.

b)

i)Q and R

ii) Both Q and R have 7 electrons in the valence shell. Both have one electron less than a stable electronic configuration. They will have a tendency to gain one more electron to attain octet.

iii) Halogens

c) S is chemically inactive since it has a complete octet and is hence stable.

d) T is a cation or positively charged particle since the number of protons(11) is greater than the number of electrons (10).Electronic configuration of T:2,8.

e)V is an anion/negatively charged particle since the number of electrons (10) is greater than the number of protons(9).Electronic configuration of V:2,8.

f)

i) Q2. Since Q has 7 valence electrons, it needs one more electron to complete the octet. Thus two Q atoms can share a pair of electrons and form a stable covalent molecule.

ii)PQ2. P has valency 2 and Q has valency 1. Hence 2 atoms of Q and one atom of P can form a stable molecule. P will give up two electrons, each one of which is taken by Q atoms.

iii) TV .T is a uni positive cation and V is a uni negative anion, they will combine to form TV.
