Following type of non-ionic detergents are present in liquid detergents, emulsifying agents and wetting agents. Label the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts in the molecule. Identify the functional group(s) present in the molecule.

Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic region

(i) Hydrophilic region

The polar part of the detergent which attracts the water molecule. It is water loving part. Presence of OH group at this end, enables the formation of intermolecular H-bonding with water.

(ii) Hydrophobic region

The nonpolar part of the detergent which resist the water. It is water repelling part.

The functional groups present in the molecule are :
1. Ether
2. Primary Alcoholic group

Alcohol group can be recognized by the presence of OH group present in the given organic compound and on the other hand, the ether group can be identified by the presence of ROR bonds where R represents the alkyl group present in the compound.
