Question

Food is cooked faster in Delhi when compared to Shimla. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Food is cooked faster in Delhi when compared to Shimla because:

  • Shimla is located at a higher altitude than Delhi. The atmospheric pressure is low in Shimla as compared to Delhi.
  • Boiling is directly proportional to atmospheric pressure.
  • At higher altitudes, atmospheric pressure reduces, and therefore the boiling point of water also gets reduced.
  • Now, heat is required in cooking the food, and heat is directly proportional to temperature.
  • After reaching boiling point temperature is uniform. So the heat capacity is reduced because the boiling point is reduced, so it will take a longer time to cook at higher altitudes.
