Question

For a given thrust, pressure is ________ proportional to the area of the surface.

Open in App
Solution

Pressure:

  1. The magnitude of the force acting normally on a unit area is called pressure.
  2. If force (F) acts normally on area (A), the pressure (P) is given by:

P=FA

From the above relation, We can conclude that:

  1. Pressure is inversely proportional to the area on which force (thrust) is applied.
  2. An increase in the area of contact causes a decrease in pressure in such a way that if the area of contact is doubled, the pressure becomes half and vice-versa.
