For a protein to be expressed in milk of a transgenic animal, its gene should be under the control of the promoter of the gene coding for
beta-lactoglobulin
For a gene product to be expressed in milk, the transgene should be incorporated within the control of the gene coding for β-lactoglobulin. β-Lactoglobulin is the major whey protein of cow and sheep's milk, and is also present in many other mammalian species; a notable exception being humans.
