Question

For an elementary reaction, 2A+BA2B, if the volume of the vessel is quickly reduced to half of its original volume, then rate of reaction will change by 'x' times. Find 'x'.

Solution

We know,
rate[reactant]nrate=K[reactant]n
For an elementary reaction,
rate (r1)=K[A]2[B]
Again, concentration=molevolume
If we reduced the volume by half, then concentration will be twice.
So, rate(r2)=K[2A]2[2B]
r2=8K[A]2[B] as r1=K[A]2[B]r2=8r1
Hence rate of reaction will become 8 times of r1.
