The correct option is B 1<n<γ
Since it rejects heat to the surroundings on increasing temperature, specific heat capacity of the gas for the given polytropic process must be negative.
For one mole gas, work done during a polytropic process PVn=k is given by
W=PdV=R(T1T2)n1
and, change in internal energy of the gas due to increase in temperature is given by
ΔU=CVΔT=R(T2T1)γ1
From first law of thermodynamics,
ΔQ=ΔU+W
CΔT=Rγ1(ΔT)Rn1(ΔT)
C=Rγ1Rn1
C=R(nγ)(n1)(γ1)
γ is always > 1, C can be negative if (nγ) is negative and (n1) is positive.

i.e 1<n<γ
Thus, option (b) is the correct answer.
