Question

For any substance, why does the temperature remain constant during the change of state?

Open in App
Solution

When a substance is heated, the kinetic energy of the particles increases, and, as a result, temperature increases. But, during a change of state, the heat energy supplied to the substance is used to break the intermolecular forces between the particles so that the state can be changed. So, the temperature remains constant till a substance completely changes its state.
