Question

For constructing an embankment, the soil is transported from a borrow area using a truck which can carry 6 m3 of soil at a time. The details are as follows.

Property Borrow area Truck (loose) Field (compacted)
Bulk density (g/cc) 1.66 1.15 1.82
Water content (%) 8 6 14

The quantity of soil to be excavated from the borrow pit, in m3 for a compacted earth fill of 100 m3 is

Solution

The correct option is A 104 cum

Volume of embankment = 100 m3

Weight of soil in embankment

=100×1.82

=182gccm3

Weight of solid in embankment

Ws=W1+w

=1821+0.14=159.649gccm3

Weight of solid remains same in borrow pit. Thus, wt. of solid in borrow pit

=159.649gccm3

Total Weight of soil in borrow pit

Ws=W1+w

159.649=W1+0.08

W=172.421gccm3

Volume of soil in borrow pit=172.4211.66

Volume of soil in borrow pit = 103.868 m3

Hence the corrent option is (a)
