Question

For each of the hypothetical data sets, determine whether a bar graph or a pie chart would be an appropriate way to display the data.

In some cases, both types of graphs may be appropriate.

  1. The percent of individuals with each of the following natural eye colors: brown, blue, green, hazel, and other
  2. The population density of each of the 50 states in the United States
  3. The number of college students who play basketball, baseball, or soccer
  4. The proportion of traditional public schools in a region compared to the proportion of charter and private K–12 schools in that region.

Solution

Finding the appropriate graph for the given data:

Bar graph:

A bar chart or bar graph is a chart or graph that presents categorical data with rectangular bars with heights or lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. A vertical bar chart is sometimes called a column chart. A horizontal bar chart is sometimes called a row chart.

Pie Chart:

A pie chart is circular statistical data that is divided into slices to illustrate numerical proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each slice is proportional to the quantity it represents.

The percent of individuals with each of the following natural eye colors: brown, blue, green, hazel, and other:

In the Bar graph, we mark the x-axis as different eye colors and the y-axis is the number of people. In this way, we can calculate easily.

Similarly in a pie chart, it has only five subdivisions we can easily determine.

Both charts can be used to represent the above condition. The number of individuals with different eye colors can be calculated easily in both graphs.

The population density of each of the 50 states in the United States:

In the Bar graph, we mark the x-axis as states and the y-axis as the population density. In this way, we can calculate easily.

But a pie chart has fifty subdivisions that may result in a very huge pie. we can able to determine easily.

So, The bar graph is a better way to represent this data because the frequencies can be investigated easily in a bar graph.

The number of college students who play basketball, baseball, or soccer:

In the Bar graph, we mark the x-axis as basketball, baseball, or soccer and the y-axis is the number of people. In this way, we can calculate. As the number of people increases the data range of the y-axis also increases.

But a pie chart has only three subdivisions, so we can easily determine the values.

Both charts can be used to represent the above condition. But the Pie chart is the better way to represent the above situation.

The proportion of traditional public schools in a region compared to the proportion of charter and private K–12 schools in that region:

The pie chart is more efficient for comparing data.

In this case, we are comparing traditional public schools and private K–12 schools in that region.

So the pie chart is more appropriate way to display the data.
