Question

For each solution, identify the ions that exist in aqueous solution and specify the concentration of ion having the highest concentration in x×102M.

(a) 0.25M(NH4)2SO4.
(b) 0.123MNa2CO3.
(c) 0.056MHNO3.

What is the value of x?

Solution

(a) (NH4)2SO42NH+4+SO2+4
Thus, the solution will contain ammonium ion and sulfate ion.
The concentration of the ammonium ions will be 2×0.25M=0.50M=50×102M.
The concentration of sulfate ions will be 0.25 M.
(b) Na2CO32Na++CO23
Thus, the solution will contain sodium ions and carbonate ions.
The concentration of sodium ions will be 2×0.123M=0.246M
The concentration of the carbonate ions will be 0.123 M.

(c) HNO3H++NO3
Thus, the solution will contain protons and nitrate ions.
The concentration of protons and nitrate ions will be 0.056 M each.
