Question

For stomata to close, guard cells have to show :

  1. More turgidity

  2. Plasmolysis

  3. Less turgidity

  4. Both B and C

Solution

The correct option is D

Both B and C

Closing and opening of stomata is controlled by guard cells. If guard cells are turgid [swollen due to water entry] they open the stomata. When they lose water [plasmolysis] , and subsequently become less turgid, they close stomata. Closing of stoma inhibits gaseous exchange and transpiration in plants.
