For the arrangement shown in the figure, the switch is closed at t=0.C2 is initially uncharged while C1 has a charge of 2μC. Find the charge on the capacitors in the steady state condition.

Solution

In the steady state, the capacitors are fully charged so no current will flow through the circuit. Thus, the capacitor C2 will be short-circuit. So potential across C2 is zero and potential across C1 will be 9V

Using Q=CV,
the charge on C1 is Q1=1×9=9μC and the charge on C2 is Q2=2×0=0μC
