Consider the following set which depicts the number of pets that a group of 6 friends have,


The data is recorded for 6 persons.

Arrange the data in the ascending order.


Observe the middle two numbers and find their mean.

The middle two numbers are 2 and 3, therefore their mean is

Mean=2+32=52=2.5

Thus, the median of the given data set is 2.5.

Hence, it can be concluded that for even number of values in the data set, the median is the mean of the middle two numbers when arranged in ascending order.
