Question

For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was digested by Kjeldahl method and the evolved ammonia was absorbed in 60 mL of M10 sulphuric acid. The unreacted acid required 20 mL of M10sodium hydroxide for complete neutralization. The percentage of nitrogen in the compound is:

Solution

In Kjeldahl method,
% N=1.4NVW
Weight of organic compound= 1.4g
Given M10H2SO4=15×60=12Meq
M10NaOH=110×20=2Meq
Hence used H2SO4 against NH3=122=10Meq
% of N=1.4×101.4=10% .
