Question

For the estimation of nitrogen, 1.4 g of an organic compound was digested by Kjeldahl's method and the evolved ammonia was absorbed in 60 mL of M/10 sulphuric acid. The unreacted acid required 20 mL of M/10 sodium hydroxide for complete neutralisation. The percentage of nitrogen in the compound is:

Solution

The correct option is B 10%
Mass of organic compound =1.4 g
Let it contain x mmol of N atom.

Organic compoundNH3x mmol2NH3+H2SO46 mmol initialy taken(NH4)2SO4 ...(i)H2SO4+NaOHNa2SO4+2H2O ...(ii)

2 mmol NaOH reacted.

Hence, mmol of H2SO4 reacted in Eq. (ii)=1

mmol of H2SO4 reacted in Eq. (i)=61=5 mmol

mmol of NH3 reacted in Eq. (i)=2×5=10 mmol

mmol of N atom in the organic compound=10 mmol

Mass of N=10×103×14=0.14 g
% of N=Mass of N in organic compoundMass of organic compound×100

% of N=0.141.4×100=10%
