Question

For uniform electric field, field lines are _______

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Uniform electric field

  1. The intensity of an electric field is constant at all points in a uniform electric field.
  2. In a uniform electric field, the field intensity does not fluctuate, and the field lines tend to be parallel and equidistant. They're all in the same place.
  3. The electric field is a region around the electric charge in which the stress or electric force acts.
  4. Electric fields are also called electrostatic fields.
  5. The symbol to represent the electric field is E
  6. SI unit of these electric fields is newton per coulomb which is equal to volts per meter.

Step 2: Field lines in a uniform electric field

  1. Because electric field lines always begin with a positive charge and end with a negative charge, they never form closed curves. They don't start or stop in mid-air.
  2. The amount of a positive or negative charge determines the number of electric field lines that leave or enter it.
In the electric field, lines never cross.
  3. In a uniform electric field, the field lines are straight, parallel, and evenly spaced.
  4. Electric field lines can never form complete loops because they can never start and end on the same charge. These field lines are always declining in potential from higher to lower. If the electric field in a given region of space is zero, no electric field lines exist.
  5. In the case of a positive charge, the line of force comes out of the charge.
  6. In case of a negative charge, the line of force will move towards the charge.
  7. The curves are equally spaced.
  8. Demonstrating with the help of a diagram.

Hence, the uniform electric field is represented by parallel and equally spaced field lines.
