Question

For what values of x and y are the following matrices equal?
A = 2x+12y0y2-5y, B=x+3y2+20-6

Open in App
Solution

We have, A=2x+12y0y2-5y , B=x+3y2+20-6

The corresponding elements of two equal matrices are equal.

2x+1=x+32x-x=3-1x=2 and 2y=y2+2y2-2y+2=0y=-b±b2-4ac2ay=2±4-82y=2±-42Also, y2-5y=-6y2-5y+6=0y2-3y-2y+6=0yy-3-2y-3=0y-3y-2=0y-3=0 or y-2=0y=3 or y=2

Now, 3y=y2+2 and y2-5y=-6 must have a common value.

Thus, A and B cannot be equal for any value of y.
