Newtons third law.

Two important things to remember about the action and reaction that Newton describes is to remember that:

A) the word Newton used for Action actually translates better to force. There does not have to be any movement to have the action reaction pair exist.

B) the action force and the reaction force are applied in opposite directions but to two different bodies.


The simplest example

is to think of you and your friend on skateboards standing next to each other. You reach over and put her on his shoulder and push. You will push him forward but you will also move backwards. He will feel the force on his shoulder from your hand. You'll feel the force on your hand from his shoulder.

You can also stand on the skateboard and push on the wall and you will just move away. Obviously you were pushed backwards by the wall. nother example is trying to walk or push your hand rapidly through some water. While you are pushing forward on the water, you can feel the water pressure pushing back on you.push

Another good example is think of a common spring. A spring taken out of a ballpoint pen. To compress that spring, you must push on both ends at the same time. Each force on each end of the spring is the same and those two forces are pushing on the two different objects.

If you push on a wall, you might not see it move. However, it acts like a spring and deflect just a little bit. The wall is a very stiff spring. The flex just enough to provide the force back on you.

A rocket engine is another good example of this action reaction. The rocket engine ejects gas at very high speed out the tail. This is being pushed by high pressure inside the rocket engine. The gas also pushes on the rocket itself. This push pushes the rocket forward.
