Photosynthesis includes light dependent and light independent reactions.
During light dependent reactions, the plant pigments absorb light energy and release enery rich electrons and this energy is utilised to synthesise ATP. The pigments in plants include chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenes and xanthophylls (carotenoids). Out of this, chlorophyll a is the major pigment involved in photosynthesis and it forms the reaction centre. Apart chlorophyll a, other pigments are considered accessory pigments that surround and protect the reaction centre.
