Question

Four grams of copper chloride on analysis was found to contain 1.890 g of copper (Cu) and 2.110 g of chlorine (Cl). What is the empirical formula of copper chloride?

Open in App
Solution

Mass of copper in copper chloride =1.89 g (given)
Mass of Chlorine in Copper Chloride =2.11 g
% age of Cu in 4 g of copper chloride =1.894×100=47.25%
% age of Cl in 4 g of copper chloride =2.114×100=52.75%
In 100 g of sample:
Mass of Cu=47.25 g
Mass of Cl=52.75 g
Moles of Cu=47.2563.5=0.74
Moles of Cl=52.7535.5=1.48
So, ratio of moles of Cu and Cl =0.741.48=12
Thus, the empirical formula of the compound is CuCl2
