Shadows are formed when an opaque object obstructs the path of light. As a result, a dark patch appears behind the object which we call its shadow.

Each side of the opaque object that is in front of the light source will form a shadow as it does not allow the light to pass through. In a nutshell, the number of light sources obstructed by an opaque object is equal to the number of shadows formed.
