Question

Four resistors of 5Ω, 10Ω, 15Ω and 20Ω are connected in parallel. Calculate the total resistance of the circuit.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 - Given data and formula

  1. The resistance of the first resistor R1=5Ω
  2. The resistance of the second resistor R2=10Ω
  3. The resistance of the third resistor R3=15Ω
  4. The resistance of the third resistor R3=20Ω

The formula for the total resistance Rp for the parallel combination is

1Rp=1R1+1R2+1R3+1R4

Step 2 - Finding the total resistance of the circuit

Substitute the values into the above formula and solve to calculate Rp.

1Rp=1R1+1R2+1R3+1R41Rp=1(5Ω)+1(10Ω)+1(15Ω)+1(20Ω)1Rp=12+6+4+3601Rp=2560Rp=6025Rp=2.4Ω

Hence, the total resistance of the circuit is 2.4Ω.
