Four spheres of radii R, 2R, 2R and 3R respectively, are placed such that their respective centres lie at x=2 m, x=6 m, x=10 m and x=20 m respectively. If density of each sphere is the same, then find the x coordinate of COM of the system of spheres.

The correct option is D x=15.22 m
Let mass of 1st sphere be m, density of material =ρ0
Then, m1=m=ρ0×43πR3
Mass of second sphere is m2=ρ0×43π(2R)3=8ρ0πR33
m2=8m
Similarly,
m3=8m, m4=27×4πR33=27m

Replacing the spheres by equivalent point masses placed at their respective COM and applying formula for system's COM:
xCM=m1x1+m2x2+m3x3+m4x4m1+m2+m3+m4
xCM=(m×2)+(8m×6)+(8m×10)+(27m×20)m+8m+8m+27m
xCM=670m44m=15.22 m
