The correct option is B 12
When four squares of side 1 cm each are cut out from a square of side 4 cm, we obtain the shape as in the above image.

Area of the resulting figure
= Area of the original square - 4 x (Area of the small squares)

Area of the original square = Length x Length
= 4 x 4
= 16 sq. cm
Area of small squares = Length x Length
= 1 x 1
= 1 sq. cm
Therefore the area of the resulting shape is
= 16 - 4 x 1 = 12 sq. cm
