  • When air is blown into a test tube with little water in it, a flat sound is heard.
  • On adding more and more water in the test tube, the length of the vibrating air column above water level decreases.
  • We know that the frequency of vibrations increases as the length of a vibrating body decreases.​
  • Therefore, the sound produced becomes more and more shrill (high-pitched sound) as we add more and more water into the test tube.
