Linear mass density of A, B, C and D are given as λ,2λ,2λ and 5λ. Find out the distance of COM of the square from the rod A if length of each rod is l.

The correct option is C 0.55 l
Let us consider this square on XY plane as shown.


Consider O to be the origin.
The distance from rod A will be the Y coordinate of COM and position of COM of rod A, B, C and D are respectively (l2,0),(l,l2),(l2,l) and (0,l2).
Mass of the rods are λl, 2lλ, 2λl and 5λl respectively.

Therefore, Y co-ordinate of COM of system is
YCOM=y1m1+y2m2+y3m3+y4m4m1+m2+m3+m4
YCOM=0×λl+l2.2λl+l×2λl+l2×5λlλl+2λl+2λl+5λl
=λl2+2λl2+2.5λl210λl
=5.5λl210λl
=0.55l
So, distance from rod A will be 0.55 l.
