Solution

The correct option is B False

Fractional distillation is not used for separating water and oil as mixture of water and oil is an immiscible liquid and fractional distillation is used to separate a mixture of miscible liquid.

  • Fractional distillation: It is a technique for separation of a mixture of two miscible liquids which have comparable boiling points i.e., the difference between their boiling points is less than 25 K.

Water and oil mixture can be separated using a separating funnel.

  • Separating funnel: It is an apparatus in which two immiscible liquids can be separated with the help of a stopcock fitted on the stem of the funnel.

Principle involved in the separation of mixture:

  • Two immiscible liquids have different densities due to which they are present in the form of two different layers which can be separated by separating funnel.
  • Immiscible liquids: A mixture of two or more liquids which do not mix with each other and are present in the form of separate layers instead of one. Example: kerosene oil in water, vegetable oil in water.
  • Miscible liquids: A mixture of two or more liquids which mix with each other completely. Example: Water (H2O) and Ethanol (C2H5OH) mixture.

Hence, the given statement is false.
