In both the stories we see the characters having a desire for freedom. In ‘Chandni’, the goat could not live anymore being tied to the pole. She longed to go to the hilltops where the air was fresh and she could be free. Chandni did this at the cost of her own death. She even thought that to die on an open field was better than to live in a small hut. All the other goats that Abbu Khan possessed also went off into the hills. In ‘I want something in a Cage’ we notice that the customer has the same opinion about freedom. He was locked up for quite some time and therefore related to the animals in the shop. He preferred being free and took whatever he could get for five dollars in a cage and set them free. He valued his freedom and knew what it was like to be locked up within four walls.
