Frogs have the ability to breathe in many ways due to their unusual life cycle which involves aquatic and terrestrial environments. An adult frog respires mainly in three ways-through lungs, skin and mouth lining. The respiration through lungs is called pulmonary respiration. The gaseous exchange that occurs through the skin by diffusion is known as cutaneous respiration. Buccopharyngeal respiration involves respiration through the lining of the mouth.
The tadpole of frog is aquatic and respires through gills. When tadpole undergoes metamorphosis to become adult frog, the gills are lost.
Tracheal respiration is observed in some insects (eg: cockroaches) which have fine tubes called trachea that help in exchange of gases.
