Question

From a given sample of uniform wire, two circular loops P and Q are made, P of radius r and Q of radius nr. If the Moment of inertia of Q about its axis is 4 times that of P about its axis (assuming the diameter of wire is much smaller than either radii), find the value of n.

Open in App
Solution

σ1=r:σ2=nσ
Mass of wire per unit length =d
Mass of P=m1=2πr1d=2πrd
Mass of Q=m2=2πr2d=2πnrd
Now I1=(2πrd)r2=2πdr3
I2=(2πnrd)(nr)2=2πdn3r3
Given I2=4I,
n3=4
n=34 or n=(4)13
