Question

From a rifle of mass 5kg, a bullet of mass 50g is fired with a velocity of 100 ms1 with respect to the ground. Calculate the initial recoil velocity of the rifle.

Open in App
Solution

Initial velocity of bullet and rifle is zero.

Mass of rifle = 5 kg

Mass of bullet = 501000=0.05kg

Final velocity of bullet = 100 ms1

Final velocity of rifle = v

Since momentum is conserved, so initial momentum is equal to final momentum

(5×v)+(0.05×100)=0

v=(100×0.05)5

v=1 ms1

The negative sign indicates that the rifle recoils with the velocity of 1 ms1 in backward direction.
