  1. Due to the refraction of light, the box appears in a different position.
  2. Refraction: The process of changing the speed of light when traveling from one medium to another, due to a change in speed the light bends.
  3. Refraction takes place only when the refractive indices of the media are different.
  4. Refractive index of water 1.33and air is 1. Thus water is a denser medium and air is a rarer medium.
  5. When the light is traveling from an optically rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards normal.
  6. When the light travels from an optically denser medium to a rarer medium, it bends away from normal.

Hence, When light travels from air to water, it bends away from normal, and when it travels from water to air, it bends towards normal.
