Question

From the following data of ΔH, of the following reactions,

C(s)+12O2(g)CO(g)AH=110 kJ
C(s)+H2O(g)CO(g)+H2(g)ΔH=132 kJ

What is the mole composition of the mixture of steam and oxygen on being passed over a coke at 1273 K, keeping the temperature constant?

Solution

The correct option is B 0.6:1
C(s)+1/2O2(g)CO(g) ; ΔH1=100kJ
C(s)+H2O(g)CO(g)+H2(g) ; ΔH2=132kJ
So the 1st reaction is exothermic and 2nd reaction is endothermic. So if a mixture of steam and O2 is passed over coke and T is keeping constant, conversion of each of CO should not show ant heat change i.e. heat evolved in reqn I= heat absorbed in reaction
n1×2×100=n2×132×1
n1n2=132110×2n1=0.6n2
n1:n2=0.6:1
