Solution

Lightning conductor

  1. It is a metallic, conducting rod which is installed on one side of the building through the walls and is connected to a copper plate.
  2. It is taller than the building so as to distract lightning from hitting the building.

Copper Plate

  1. As the name suggests, it is a conducting plate made of copper.
  2. When lightning strikes the metallic rod, it passes through the rod and reaches the copper plate which is buried inside the earth.
  3. Then the electricity from the plate dissipates into the earth which has zero potential.

From the given figure,

  1. A is a rod. Hence, it is the lightning conductor.
  2. B is a plate buried inside the earth. Hence, it is the copper plate.

Hence, A is the lightning conductor and B is the copper plate.
