From the list of animals given below, identify how many of them show the monoestrous type of reproductive cycle.
Dogs, sheep, bears, monkeys, horses, foxes
The reproductive cycle in non-primate mammals is called an oestrous cycle, which can be polyoestrous (more than one cycle) or monoestrous (one cycle).
Examples for monoestrous type of reproductive cycle include animals such as dogs, wolves, foxes, bears, etc.
When many cycles occur throughout the year, it is called a non-seasonal polyestrous cycle. It continues throughout the year without a gap. E.g:- cows, pigs, rats, etc.
When few cycles occur in a small portion of the year, it is known as a seasonal polyestrous cycle. It is limited to certain seasons or a few months of the year which might vary depending on the animal. E.g:- horse, sheep, deer, cats, etc.
The menstrual cycle is similar to the non-seasonal polyestrous cycle, but here the cycles are present throughout the year. The animals are sexually reproductive throughout their cycle, irrespective of fertility. Occurs mostly in primates- humans, chimpanzees, monkeys etc.
