The rise and setting of Sun is due to rotation of earth around the sun. At any given instance only half hemisphere of earth receives sun light while the other is in dark. The coming of light to the darker portion of the earth is termed as sun rise. Now since earth rotates from West to East (as witnessed from standing on North Pole) the light is first received on Eastern Margin of the earth (Sun rise) and consequently sun travelling from east to west.
