Solution

Dear student,

The cell membrane (also known as the plasma membrane) is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment (the extracellular space)

Function
  • The basic function of the cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings.
  • The cell membrane ensures that the right amount and type of material enters and leaves the cell. It is a selectively permeable membrane that defines a cell i.e. forms the boundary of a cell.
  • The cell membrane controls the movement of substance in and out of cells and organelles.
