The cell membrane (also known as the plasma membrane) is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment (the extracellular space)
Function
The basic function of the cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings.
The cell membrane ensures that the right amount and type of material enters and leaves the cell. It is a selectively permeable membrane that defines a cell i.e. forms the boundary of a cell.
The cell membrane controls the movement of substance in and out of cells and organelles.
