If pregnancy occurs, relaxin is produced by placenta to keep the uterine smooth muscles relaxed. During parturition, relaxin is released in large quantities by placenta to loosen the pubic symphysis which in turn relaxes the suture and widens the birth canal to facilitate parturition. Thus, main function of relaxin is to relax the pubic symphysis and hence is the name relaxin.
