Relaxin hormone is secreted by corpus luteum in small quantities during each menstrual cycle. It serves to relax the uterus by inhibiting uterine contractions to facilitate ovum implantation. If pregnancy occurs, relaxin is produced by placenta to keep the uterine smooth muscles relaxed. During parturition, relaxin is released in large quantities by placenta to loosen the pubic symphysis which in turn relaxes the suture and widens the birth canal to facilitate parturition. Thus, main function of relaxin is to relax the pubic symphysis and hence is the name relaxin.
