Solution

Gametes:

  1. Gametes are also known as sex cells.
  2. Male gametes are called sperm.
  3. Female gametes are called eggs or ova.

Haploid cells:

  1. Haploid cells have only one set of chromosomes.
  2. Haploid cells are formed as a result of meiosis.

Gametes have a haploid number of chromosomes:

  1. Gametes contain half the chromosomes contained in a normal diploid cell.
  2. Gametes are produced as a result of meiosis.
  3. During meiosis, the chromosome number is reduced to half and each daughter cell receives half the set of chromosomes.
  4. These gametes unite together to form a zygote.
  5. If both the gametes were diploid, the zygote will have double the number of chromosomes of somatic cells, which in turn results in an abnormal organism.
  6. Thus, gametes have a haploid number of chromosomes.
