Solution

Ganga Action Plan:

  1. The Ganga Action Plan was launched as a major step toward cleaning the river Ganga.
  2. The objective behind the plan was to improve the water quality by implementing diversion and treatment of domestic sewage.

(i) Yamuna river pollution:

  1. Yamuna river has a layer of toxic foam covering the top of the water due to increased pollution.
  2. The industrial and factory discharges in the river consist of a high level of ammonia that deteriorates the water quality.
  3. Pesticide runoffs from agricultural fields to the water cause the Yamuna river to become polluted.

(ii) Water pollution level:

  1. The water pollution level, pollutant impact on ecology and water usage can be determined by the abundance of the pollutant.
  2. The degree of water pollution can be studied by changes in temperature, pH, titration tests, and colorimetric tests.

(iii) Ganga at Kanpur:

  1. Kanpur disposes of human sewage and animal waste directly into the river.
  2. Kanpur is one of the most populated cities in the country that has its daily activities like bathing and washing associated with the river Ganga.
  3. Carcinogenic elements were identified in Kanpur's water that made it unfit for aquatic life.

(iv) Water pollution prevention:

  1. The citizens can stop the direst disposal of sewage and waste into the water bodies to prevent pollution.
  2. Pesticide and other chemical runoffs must not be allowed to flow into the water body.
  3. Human activities like bathing, washing clothes, urinating, and sewage must not be associated with the water bodies.
