Ganga Action Plan was launched in 1985 to improve the quality of the Ganga water.

Its main objective was to clean the Ganga river by removing the water pollutants. In order to prevent water pollution, the domestic and industrial wastes were treated in sewage and industrial effluent treatment plants before these were discharged in the Ganga. Also, people were made aware not to throw unburnt bodies in the river and not to defecate on its banks.
