Garima used to go to school by crossing the river everyday during the monsoon season. The river got flooded so she had to take a different route, which was through a sea. If the distance that she swam through both the river and the sea was equal, where did she put more effort?
She put more effort when she swam through the river
It easier for a person to swim in sea water than in river water. Due to the presence of salt, the density of sea water is more than the density of river water. Therefore, with a smaller portion of the body submerged in sea water, the weight of sea water displaced becomes equal to the total weight of the body. While to displace the same weight of river water, a large portion of the body will have to be submerged in water. So, it becomes difficult for Garima to swim in river water.
